Eric Ravilious (1903-1942). What versatility – watercolours, lithographs, wood engravings, book illustrations and designs for pottery.
His pictures have a serene and comforting beauty. Ravilious has translated the complexity of the world into simple, pleasing lines and shapes. He was inspired by the Sussex Downs, chalk cliffs and white horses. The muted colours feel as if they are mixed with the white chalk of the landscapes he loves. There is an orderly calm created by flowing lines and rounded shapes.
I’d like to lie down in one of his landscapes and have a little snooze with a watery sun above me and a gentle breeze in the air. A painter with an enduring and timeless appeal.
